Step 1 of 9

Do I need it, or just want it?

You are holding your pocket money and something shiny is calling your name. First question — and be honest: need, or want?

Step 2 of 9

I NEED it

A need is something your life actually requires — school supplies, a bus ticket, a gift you promised.

Step 3 of 9

I WANT it

A want is something that would be fun to have. Wants are fine! Smart spenders just treat them differently.

Step 4 of 9

Can I afford it without borrowing?

Even for needs, check the money. If buying it means borrowing, the price is really higher than the tag says.

Step 5 of 9

Do I still want it after 3 days?

For wants, use the three-day rule: walk away and see if you still think about it in three days.

Step 6 of 9

Buy it — needs come first

If you need it and can afford it — buy it. That is exactly what money is for.

Step 7 of 9

Save up first

If you cannot afford it yet, make a plan. Saving two weeks of pocket money feels slow, but the thing feels twice as good when you earn it.

Step 8 of 9

Buy it guilt-free

Still dreaming about it three days later? Then it is a real want. Enjoy it, guilt-free.

Step 9 of 9

Skip it — it was an impulse

Forgot about it by Tuesday? That was an impulse — and you just kept your money. That skill will make you rich one day.
